Proudly introducing the enchanting new book
The first publication from NSW-based author Leanne Heffernan
From the readers:
'I just finished reading Leanne's beautiful book, I Still Dream of Horses. Congratulations, what a lovely story. I just could not put the book down. Well done!'
'With the rain outside hitting the tin roof, rugged up in bed, reading your book was like stepping back in time for me. I was only a few years younger when I got my first horse. I couldn't put it down, well written Leanne. I can relate to it so well, love it.'
Meet the characters
All Leanne ever wanted was a horse of her own. At the age of 14 her dream comes to life when she becomes the proud new owner of Consuela, a swaybacked old appaloosa mare who is far from ordinary.
As their world continues to change around them, the girl and her beloved horse find themselves on an unexpected journey through the most challenging years of their lives. Leanne grows up and Consuela grows old, but their incredible bond remains unbreakable; in the end, only time can separate them. I Still Dream of Horses is a spellbinding reminder that sometimes, dreams really do come true.
Although it is categorised as 'fiction', the book is strongly based on true events; the characters, the places and the events were all real. The storyline has been adapted by the author so that it is narrated from the perspective of Consuela, the little appaloosa horse who was the reason for it all.
Consuela's mannerisms and personality shine through within her storytelling, giving every reader a unique opportunity to get to know the humble yet incredible mare for themselves.
I Still Dream of Horses is suited to horse lovers aged from about 10 years old through to adult; it is a unique book that will appeal to anyone who ever found themselves intoxicated by the magic of horses. There are some things in life that you never truly grow out of...

I grew up in the southern suburbs of Canberra, ACT, and attended Caroline Chisholm High School and Erindale College. After graduating from year 12 I studied Veterinary Nursing at the Canberra Institute of Technology.
As a young adult I lived in several small towns in the surrounding regions of the ACT, and these days I am settled in Binalong NSW with partner Rob and our mixed bag of 4 amazing kids. In my spare time you can find me working with my horses, listening to true crime podcasts, and I've recently started getting into painting and learning about art history too.
For as long as I can remember, my favourite book has been 'The Silver Brumby' by Elyne Mitchell. I would probably credit that book with being almost entirely responsible for my lifelong love affair not only with horses but also with reading. I spent countless nights as a child staying up way too late, hiding under my doona with a torch reading when I was supposed to be sleeping. My other favourite/inspirational writers include Rachael Treasure, Tim Winton and Bryce Courtenay.
I first started writing I Still Dream of Horses in June 2008, with a working title of 'Straight from the horse's mouth: Consuela's story'. I originally intended to write a personal memoir of sorts, about all of the incredible experiences and memories that I'd had with Consuela. I thought it would be good to have it written down so that I could read it in years to come and remember it all, and maybe share it with my own kids one day. Over time it evolved into a very meaningful story that I really wanted to share with people.
I'm looking forward to seeing what the future has in store for me next; maybe it will even be worth writing another book about.
